The Detroit Film Theatre at the DIA has been hosting the World Opera in Cinema series. This film series brings operas preformed at some of the most famous opera houses in the world, preformed by some of the most famous musicians in the world right here to Detroit.
Tickets to each performance are $20, $18 for seniors, students and DIA members.
While I understand that the performance quality is much greater, I'm not sure how I feel about spending more on a movie ticket that I would pay to see a live performance from one of our lovely area opera companys, especially since these recordings are probably all on Netflix. I might find myself stopping in for one, though.
Here's what the offerings are for the rest of the year:
Jan 28-30: Rigoletto performed by Teatro Regio of Parma. Massimo Zanetti conducts and Leo Nucci sings the title role.
Feb 18-20: Carmen perfored by La Scala. Daniel Barneboim conducts with Jonas Kaufmann as Don José and Anita Rachvelishvili in the title role.
March 25-27: Otello performed at the Salzburg Festival. Riccardo Muti conducts and Aleksandrs Antonenko sings the title role.
April 15-17: Il Trovatore performed at the Gran Teatre del Liceu. Marco Amiliato conducts.
May 27-29: Roméo et Juliette performed at the Salzburg Festival. Yannick Nezet-Seguin conducts with Nino Machaidze and Rolando Villazon in the title roles.
